Reverse osmosis (RO) uses a membrane process to reduce many dissolved substances from water. The suitability and performance of an RO system depends on the feed water and the system design.

Installation requirements
For installations on a public water supply, applicable water-fittings requirements must be followed. In England and Wales, the Drinking Water Inspectorate advises that consumers give notice to their water company before installing a reverse-osmosis system.
Important considerations
RO systems can produce a reject-water stream and require filter and membrane maintenance. Exact water use, replacement intervals and performance depend on the particular system and operating conditions.
